Khruangbin is an American musical trio known for blending global music influences, including soul, funk, and psychedelia, with a base in classic Thai music from the 1960s. The band hails from Houston, Texas, and consists of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums. Their name, “Khruangbin” (กรุงบิน), translates to “airplane” in Thai, a nod to the international essence of their sound and the influence of Thai rock and funk music on their style.
My favorite song is August 10. In a live performance album they perform a 9 minute version with some great covers mixed in including the reggae song “Ring the Alarm” by the Tenors, which is also covered by Sublime.
Khruangbin’s music is characterized by its minimalistic approach, with a focus on instrumental prowess and the interplay between the guitar and bass, underpinned by laid-back, steady drum grooves. Their sound is atmospheric and spacious, often incorporating elements of dub, surf rock, and psychedelia, creating a unique and highly listenable blend that crosses cultural and genre boundaries.
The band gained attention with their first album, “The Universe Smiles Upon You” (2015), which drew heavily from 1960s and 1970s Thai funk. Their follow-up, “Con Todo El Mundo” (2018), expanded their influences to include music from the Middle East, Africa, and other parts of Asia, demonstrating their eclectic approach and deep appreciation for global sounds. “Mordechai” (2020), another critically acclaimed album, introduced more vocals and continued to explore diverse musical landscapes.
Khruangbin is known for their compelling live performances, often embarking on extensive international tours. Their visual aesthetic, including their music videos and stage presence, reflects their eclectic musical style, with a flair for retro fashion and an aura of mystique. The band’s ability to seamlessly blend a wide array of musical influences into a coherent and distinctive sound has earned them a dedicated and growing global fan base.
This song is also performed live in their incredible NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert.
